It might surprise you Jeff, but I am with you on the statements you made in this part of the interview.

I was actually writing about the channel "cannibalization" or "conflict" myself at ReveNews... here

http://www.revenews.com/carstencumbrowski/affiliate-marketing-and-channel-conflicts/

I also do not interpret Google's acquisition of Performics (as a freebie that came with DoubleClick as a bonus) as a validation of affiliate marketing. They are well aware that CPA/CPS is important.. Marissa Mayer, Vice President of Search Product and User Experience at Google said during her 2007 SES San Jose Keynote that "CPA is the holy grail" of advertising.

They launched Google Pay-Per-Action, but did a poor job with it. The Performics acquisition might helps Google to understand the industry a bit better and build a killer app that combines AdWords with Pay-Per-Action and affiliate marketing to make it as scalable as possible, but provides manual control where necessary and wanted by publishers AND advertisers.

I wrote two longer posts to Google PPA and the future of Google Advertising at SearchEngineJournal.com

Well ... to the affiliate networks... there is nothing to say, or is there? :) I was gone last week, that's why the delayed response. Still catching up :)
